A real show of our tasteful diversity
No matter where you’re from, food has an intrinsic way of taking you down memory lane and remind you of who you are. And truly if there is that one thing that can tell a story about a people and their outlook on life, it is not only the food they eat, but how they prepare it as well. In South Africa there is no shortage of food stories to be devoured and enjoyed; with flavours from every corner of the world, infused with traditional influences and ingredients from all the nine provinces of the country - South Africa is a real melting pot.
It is the food that will have you journeying around the country discovering something new, something different, and definitely something cultured at every corner. From Limpopo to the Cape; rural areas to big metropolitans; there is no shortage of warm, hearty, and sometimes surprising food to delight any palate.
What will be obvious to anyone on a culinary journey in South Africa; is the communal way South Africans love to prepare and enjoy their food. Perhaps it can be attributed to the wonderful weather enjoyed all year round; but South Africans relish every opportunity to sit around a fire either braaiing their favourite chops, cooking together for weddings or funerals, or standing next to an open fire, three-foot (cast iron pot) over it, cooking their favourite potjie. it is most especially interesting during the cooking of a potjie, as it is when the beauty of South Africans is revealed. Even if an old family recipe is being followed, everyone around the fire adds their own creativity and uniqueness into the pot when they throw in the assortment of meat, spices, and vegetables. What is served from that pot is a dish as giving and vibrant as the people themselves.
And that is the magic of the food experience in South Africa – a real show of how tasteful our diversity is.
So, a challenge to you – bring your team to the South African Heritage and Tourism Festival and show the world that your potjie is the best.
